The Last Dig at Greg Hollander's Bonsai Nursery

by Earl Ekman

On Saturday March 13th, we will meet to have our last opportunity to dig bonsai trees at a really good price. These trees are material Greg has been growing for years, and he has graciously offered them to our club. We have been digging these trees for several years, but this will be the last dig. All the material belongs to the club, but anything left after the 13th, he is going to dig up and haul away. He wants to level this area of his yard and plant grass seed so he can recover his back yard.

The material that we need to dig is:

Pines - black, white, scotch
Maples – tridents, Japanese
Elms – seiju, Yatsabusa, cork bark, Chinese
Some junipers and various other trees.

Prices will range from $5.00 to $25.00. There may be a few that are more expensive but not many. The club will meet at 8:30 AM at the parking lot of the Ramada Inn, I-71 and Zorn Ave. From there, we will caravan over to Greg’s farm at Chrisney, IN. If you get lost, you can call Greg at 812-686-2479, me (502 376-1584), or Lee Squires (502 639-9374).

Be sure to bring a shovel, saws, pruners or anything you use for digging and containerizing the trees. The club will have some plastic pots and burlap. A friend of Lee’s will accompany us to help us dig and burlap.

If you can bring a truck or trailer or both, it would be greatly appreciated. We should have quite a lot of material to bring back. There are probably 50 to 60 pine trees if we want to dig them. If you get a chance, please say thanks to Greg for all he has done for the club. Thanks to him, many of us have some outstanding trees, and our sales of the trees have helped the club financially. Thanks, Greg, for all you've done. Earl
