On October 31st I completed the Bonsai Intensive program with Boon Manakitivipart. The Bonsai Intensive program is a 3-year course covering a variety of techniques from beginner to advanced. Topics such as proper repotting, wiring, grafting, advanced bending, styling, and formal display are covered in the program.
My final project was a Western Juniper (Juniperus occidentalis). I began work on this tree back in late May. The students were first tasked with finding a front, and the one shown here is what was finally chosen. The tree was placed on a turntable and the students each got to pick 1 or more possible fronts. From there they were to draw their proposed design solutions. Once everyone was finished, the solutions were discussed within the group and Boon described his vision of the tree. As the students progressed through the Intensive Series, their designs became better and better.
Part of choosing the front of the tree involved creating a number of design options. This meant that the students got a chance to practice their drawing skills.
With a good design now in mind, it was time to start making the design a reality.
The first major task was to perform a severe bend on this tree. This meant that a large section of the trunk was hollowed, wrapped and wired, and carefully bent with a jack and guy wires. Work such as this should only be performed on a very healthy tree, and only then using proper technique to ensure the health of the tree.
With the major bend set in place, the work is complete, for now. The tree is left to rest and recover. The new growth will ensure that the tree survives the drastic work and ensure that the bend holds when the wires are removed.
In late October it was time to start work on the next phase of development. The tree recovered very well, so Boon tasked me with completing the work for my final project. I was to completely wire the tree and give it a first styling.
Part of Boon's instruction is the teaching of proper wiring techniques. The Intensive students learn how to wire properly, making the wire job both beautiful and effective. By studying great trees and design and keeping high standards, the student's eye improves. It was with this knowledge and training that I felt confident to start work.
In the end, Boon was happy with my work. The tree was wired out, branches arranged, and a new planting angle chosen. I am now the 12th graduate of the Bonsai Intensive series. I will continue to study with Boon from time to time by returning for independent study. Boon's knowledge, artistic eye, and high standard of excellence makes him a fantastic teacher. Studying with him for the last few years has been one of the best experiences of my life.
