Doug Philips started in bonsai about 1986. Over the years, Doug started specializing in local olive trees; and, in the early 1990's, he developed a method of making large trunk trident maples. This technique was published in the 2003/No. 2 issue ofInternational Bonsai. Since then, he has modified his method through trial and error.
On Jan 10, Doug will conduct a workshop where we will be able to design our own "Sumo" trident. Below is Doug's write-up of the workshop, where he describes what we will do in this two-part workshop and the tools and other supplies we will need to bring. NOTE: You will need to purchase solid copper wire, solder, and a small soldering torch prior to the first meeting in order to make the frame (See Doug’s write up below for complete details).
The cost of this two part workshop is $150 for payment in advance or $200 paid at the first workshop. This amount is for approximately 75 to 80 trident whips that will be needed. If a larger frame is made and additional whips are needed, they will sell for $1.50 each. Send payment to Tom McCurry to participate in this new and different workshop.
