May was a busy time for bonsai in Louisville. On May 10 and 11, the club was part of the Art in the Arbor exhibit at Jefferson Unitarian Church. Saturday was a beautiful day, but, unfortunately, the rain and cold were not so kind on Sunday. On Tuesday May 13th, we had a Beginner Workshop at the Bon Air Library. Thanks to all who attended to help make this workshop a success. Finally, on May 19th, several of us helped a girl scout troop in Simpsonville design and pot their first bonsai. As you can imagine, it was kind of hectic, trying to get 13 girls (and one boy) started and to stay on tasks. Many of the girls went home with some nice potential trees; but, since some of them wanted to do their own trimming, some trees look a little strange.
On Saturday, June 21st, I will be working on Japanese black pine decandling at my home in Shepherdsville. I'm always looking for company while working on trees. So if you would like to join me in the work, or just want to learn what's involved in decandling, plan on joining me. Please RSVP by June 19th for directions.
Doug Philips has offered to host a day of bonsai at his home Saturday, July 19th from 8am to 4pm. Doug lives just south of Bardstown and has a great workshop, perfect too for summer bonsai work. More information will be in next month’s newsletter.
2nd Tuesday – Trim and Talk June 10, 7-9pm at Bon Air Library
Trim and Talk (azaleas). Our Tuesday meeting this month will be one in the Trim and Talk series. The topic this month will be on azaleas, pruning and wiring techniques. Join the group at the library. Bring an azalea or other tree to work on during the session. Attendees should come prepared to do some work on trees and talk about what they are doing.
Following Saturday – Garden Tour June 14th, 3pm
This year's garden tour will have two stops, the first at Mike Schmidt’s in Louisville for appetizers, and the second at Kenny Popp’s in Memphis Indiana for the main meal. Directions are given on page 7. Kenny has stated that his yard has plenty of shade, so bring a couple lawn chairs and enjoy the countryside. For those interested, Kenny also has a pond where you can fish if you wish - bring your own gear. The club asks that you bring a dish or two for the pot luck. Barbeque and soft drinks will be provided. If something stronger is desired, you will have to provide that. If you plan to attend please RSVP by June 10th.
