On April 15, Rodney Clemmons, a well known bonsai master, will come to Louisville to conduct a demo and workshop on rock planting. In May, I attended such a workshop conducted by Rodney and came away with a nice addition to my collection (pictured at the left). Earl Ekman and one of our new members - Zak Logan - are arranging to collect the rocks that can be used. These rocks will be flat rocks rather than the large ones we used in my workshop. They should offer the option of making a forest, a mountain scene or any combination. Of course, if you have a special rock that you would like to use, let Earl know. This should be a great workshop for the beginner to the advanced bonsai artist. Price of the workshop will be $50 plus cost of the trees.
Greg Hollander of Hollander's Tiny Trees has offered us some great prices on trees to be used in this workshop and other workshops. He is offering the GLBS the following:
- Shimpaku Junipers – 5 to 6 inches - $3.50/ea
- Shimpaku Junipers – 6 to 8 inches - $7.00/ea
- Shimpaku Junipers – 10 to 12 inches - $15.00/ea
- Seju Elms – approximately 6 inches - $9.00/ea (limited number)
- Seju Elms – larger size grown in ground - $30 - $50/ea (depending on age)
- Japanese Maples "Sago Kaku" [beautiful red leaves all summer] – in 6" pots - $7.00/ea
- Tridents in 4" pots - $3.00/ea
- Tridents in 6" pots - $4.50/ea
If you are interested in participating in the Clemmons workshop, call Earl (222-7419) to get your name on the participant list and to place your order for the trees. There is a limited number of slots open for this workshop,
In addition to the above listed trees, Hollander's Tiny Trees has a number of different type trees from the starter type or field grown trees. Greg's prices are very reasonable and the quality is super.
