Last month, we presented an article “Why Shohin” by Colin Lewis. Colin indicated that in working with Shohin, the bonsai artist learned the finer details of designing bonsai. He also said in working with shohin, one learns ‘bonsai patience’ and develops skills he can use on regular bonsai. This was a lead-in article for this month’s training article on Shohin. Those of you who haven’t tried your ‘hand’ with Shohin (and those of you who have), should read the article starting on page four. I believe it gives a fairly complete compendium on Shohin including design, fertilizing, and winter protection to name a few. I hope you enjoy (and learn) from this article, I know I certainly did.
Last month we indicated that the Board of Directors met to set up next year’s meeting schedule. I can say I am excited by the schedule. In addition to the regular members’ garden tour, Oxmoor show, and Christmas party, they are planning to get Dana Quattelbaum and Sean Smith (a suiseki expert) to give workshops. Our local members will give pottery, Phoenix Graft and winterization workshops. There are several field trips scheduled, including a stone collection and a trip to a bonsai grower in Indiana. More details will be given as the schedule is firmed up.
I think it should be a fun-filled year. Remember that these programs are not limited to members. If you have friends who would be interested, they are
welcome also. Of course, if they would like to become
a member, that would be great.
The board also set up a membership discount that will help both members and the club.
We are always looking for articles from members. If you would like to submit an article, let me know. I would be happy to help you with any research or putting the article together.
