Bonsai Theft

September 1, 2004 19:36

I was recently informed of the theft of two trees from the Morikami Museum Delray Beach FL. I don’t have a lot of details except to say that the trees were there at the end of a work day and they were missing the next day. The museum and garden are enclosed in fencing and there apparently is video cameras for security. The reason I am telling you this is to say to use caution with your own trees. Most of us don’t have chain link fences nor security cameras to protect our trees. So what can we do? The answer may be as simple as not “advertising” that we have trees in our backyard. By that I mean to not have them visible from the street, when talking to people about your trees, don’t build them up as very expensive specimens.

Whenever I use pictures of your trees in this newsletter, I will not use your address. We put telephone numbers only on the inside of the newsletter so they are not visible to non-members. On our website (www.louisvillebonsai.org) we have the officers and board members telephone numbers listed. This was done so that non bonsai people could easily have someone to talk to. We may have to reconsider this. It is a shame we live in such a world, but that appears to be the case.

Just use caution with your trees. We don’t want to report such a theft here in Louisville.
