Our next meeting will be a pottery workshop at Sacred Heart Academy, 3175 Lexington Rd. This workshop on July 24th will last from 10 AM to 3 PM with a break for lunch. Linda Kossmann is the art director for Sacred Heart and thanks to her and the school, we get to use their facility every year. Linda is extremely talented and if you were at the garden tour, you got to see examples of her art. She will be guiding us in the process of making bonsai pots and other pottery items. Over the years many beautiful items have been produced at this workshop. This year, in addition to firing the pots in the kiln at the school, we will also be firing our art work in an open pit bon fire on Oct. 9th. This workshop is a wonderful way to make a beautiful pot for future use. It’s a lot of fun so don’t miss it.

I want to thank Lee Squires, Tom McCurry and Linda Kossmann for inviting all of us to see their bonsai trees and beautiful gardens. Some of their trees were absolutely spectacular. They spent a lot of time preparing for this special day and I can’t thank them enough. Most of us came away with lots of good ideas for the development of our own trees and gardens.

On August 22, Sunday, we will be having a terrific workshop with Mary Madison, “the buttonwood queen”. Mary is an exciting artist so make plans for her visit.

Recently, past president Ronald Reagan passed away and I, like most of the nation, reflected on his many accomplishments and his great deeds while he was in office. To me he seemed to be a true world leader. During April, I was in China and was talking to one of our tour guides. He was extremely knowledgeable regarding American politics. I asked him why he followed our politics so closely and he made what I thought was a very profound statement. He said “the Chinese watch American presidential elections because when we elect someone, we are electing the leader of the entire world” On looking back perhaps Ronald Reagan was our first leader of the entire world.

Thank you Mr. Reagan for your leadership.
