June 12th we will have our annual garden tour at three different members garden. This always seems to be the highlight of the year. I know I can hardly wait. The three members we will visit are Lee Squires, Tom McCurry and Linda Kossmann. The club is going to do something a little different this year. We will visit Lee Squires Garden at 1 PM till 2 PM and at Lee’s we will enjoy appetizers. The appetizers will be provided by the club. Next we will move to Tom McCurry’s new garden where we will enjoy his garden and have our main meal. This year it will consist of barbeque chicken sandwiches. We will be at Tom’s from 2 PM to 4 PM. From there we will move to Linda Kossmann’s garden and view her trees. At Linda’s, we will enjoy dessert. This could be our greatest garden tour ever.
We are asking each family to bring a vegetable or salad to be eaten at Tom’s and a dessert to be eaten at Linda’s. The club will provide paper plates, utensils, napkins, chips, drinks, etc. You may want to bring a couple of folding chairs so you can relax while you eat. I’m looking forward to seeing the gardens and all of you on June 12th.
Directions to each garden are given in club news.
Our Dr. John Doyle Bonsai show at Oxmoor was a great success this year. Many thanks goes to Gene Sewell for all his hard work in making this show so enjoyable. The show is a lot of work and Gene takes on the entire thing and never complains. Thank you Gene, you did a good job.
I’ve noticed recently that members are coming up with lots of good ideas, such as Midge Goeth writing an article for the newsletter - “More Than Just Tofu”. She is spending a lot of time researching her article. I can hardly wait to see this months article on fertilizing tips.
Charlie Johnson is looking at a soil mix using a product called Solite. It looks like a great growing medium. Charlie and I are going to see what we can do with it and we’ll get back to you with the results.
George Buehler has taken over the newsletter and is doing an absolutely fantastic job. I look forward to getting our club newsletter to see what George has included in it.
I need to make arrangements for this year’s Christmas party. If you have an idea for a fun location, please contact me at 222-7419 or 269-0004.
We will shortly start drawing up next year’s schedule and we want to make it as interesting for you as possible. If you have some things you would like done or programs you would like to see, please let me know.
Hope your trees are strong and healthy. Earl
